So, what “pesticides” are you having for dinner tonight? “The dirty Dozen”- “The clean 15”
When I was starting out to do research for my blog this week I was going to do a post on the top questions about organic foods because I thought I bet you are like me in that you don’t know a lot about organic foods and would like to know the basics to start with anyway. That post will be coming.. But I ran into this and I wanted you to know this information.. Now…
Can kill you and you might be eating it….. Everyday!.
I WAS……….Until now.
What is …..Methyl Bromide? —-Well, do you ever eat strawberries?, do you buy Organic strawberries? ..You will from now on…
The threats you can’t see
Methyl bromide is a pesticide that is mainly used on strawberry plantations. It has a very high level of toxicity. The effects of extreme exposure to this pesticide can be fatal. It can be absorbed though your skin or it may be inhaled. It can cause severe chemical burns on the eyes, skin, and airways. It can do devastating damage your lungs, kidneys, and your central nervous system. This pesticide also is depleting our ozone layer.
When and if you buy strawberries you might be able to see on the label if they are Methyl Bromide free. So please check ! My advice? buy organic.
Getting your attention
I wanted to do that right off the bat here. Get your attention!! Did it work?
In doing research for this post I learned a lot of statistics and facts I didn’t know…Some facts were good news like this.
According to The Environmental Working Group (an organization of scientists, researchers and policymakers) certain types of organic produce can reduce the amount of toxins you consume on a daily basis by as much as 80 percent!.
80 percent ! Some Good news!. Especially for those of us trying to eat MORE fruits and vegetables and for vegetarians and those who just like to try eat a good amount of them already everyday and that includes your favorite blogger. 🙂
The EWG’s Most wanted list
I am sure you are just like me. I want to know what I’m eating and I want to eat healthy foods not foods soaked in toxins.
Knowledge…. is power
I wanted to give you a list called “The Dirty Dozen.” This is a list was recently compiled by The EWG . The website is http://www.ewg.org/ I suggest you go there and check it out. It’s an interesting and informative site that is now in my favorites on my computer!.
Unless you like the idea of consuming a lot of toxic pesticides take a look at this list and take it with you the next time you go shopping for fruits and vegetables.
I give you…
The Dirty Dozen
3. Strawberries (not a big surprise after reading that article)
6. Nectarines – IMPORTED
7. Grapes – IMPORTED
8. Sweet bell peppers
10. Blueberries – DOMESTIC
11. Kale – Collard greens.
This List is called “The clean 15” and is a list of the fruits and vegetables that had little or no traces of pesticides that according to the EWG IS safe to consume in Non – Organic form.
3. Sweet Corn
6. Sweet peas
8. Kiwi fruit
11. Cantaloupe -DOMESTIC
14. Sweet Potatoes
15. Sweet Onions
I’m sure you are just like me. I want to know what I’m eating and I want to eat healthy foods not foods soaked in toxins and wind up eating a cocktail of pesticides each week in my favorite foods.
The truth is
I know it can be expensive and I know maybe you think “I don’t really eat enough fruits and vegetables” But when is a little pesticide…. good to eat?
Is there something in your shopping cart you can part with this week to afford that Organic lettuce?. You have to decide of course for yourself. I am on a budget like you I’m sure. So I DO understand. I do look at my cart each week and “juggle” things. Meaning I ask myself what is more important.. Or “what can I afford this week, organic tomatoes or organic strawberries?”. I have been known to put back something to be able to buy another. When I have chosen to do that though, I usually have something that maybe I really don’t need. Like 10 different kinds of trail mix!. (not really) but you get the picture right?.
I think it’s going to be a question we are all going to have to start asking ourselves or continue to get a concoction of pesticides each week in our favorite foods that somewhere down the road, we’re going to see some results that we aren’t going to like.
Better health starts with you and it’s a tough decision at times. I know. But for you and your Family I hope you take this list with you the next time you go to the store and see the food you are eating with a more educated eye and make a few different choices. I realize it can be pricy and it’s not just up to us. It has to start to change. I am going to continue to learn more. I want to be educated about this subject . Knowledge is power and I think we all have to decide we are worth really knowing what we are eating. We have to do what we can and do our best to be safe. Washing vegetables and fruits is always a smart thing to do before eating. It does remove some but not a lot. I thought it did. Like I said, knowledge is power. Well I now know that as well. I want to know more. I hope I have prompted you to want to know more too!. I think it’s when we ALL start asking questions, the big questions, like “why?” and “why not?” instead of just taking excepting what’s in front of us….
That’s when things can change..
The good news is……
Some growers are trying to find alternatives to this pesticide though…Hopefully, more and more growers will do the same.
(This is a link to a story on how some growers in Santa Cruz California are choosing alternatives to Methyl Bromide!)
